Compress Image Online

Shrink image file size in your browser, then download the result. Ideal before uploading to job portals, school forms, or chat apps — nothing is sent to our servers.

How to compress an image

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP photo from your phone or computer.
  2. Pick a target size or quality. For most online forms, 200–500 KB is enough; for ID uploads, check the size limit stated on the form.
  3. Download the compressed image. The original file is never uploaded — compression happens inside your browser.

Common size limits for Philippine online forms

Government and school portals often reject photos that are too large. Typical requirements you may meet:

  • ID photos for online applications (passport appointments, PhilSys, civil service and licensure exams) usually need a clear JPG under a few hundred kilobytes, sometimes with exact pixel dimensions such as 2×2 inches at 300 dpi.
  • Job portals and HR systems commonly cap attachments at 1–5 MB.
  • School LMS uploads and scholarship forms often limit each file to 2 MB.

Always follow the latest instructions on the official portal, because limits change.

How compression works

JPG and WebP use lossy compression: they discard detail the eye barely notices. Reducing quality from 100% to about 75–80% often cuts file size by 60–80% with little visible difference. Resizing also helps a lot — a 12-megapixel phone photo (4000×3000 pixels) is far larger than needed for a form that displays it at 600 pixels wide. PNG is lossless, so it is best for screenshots, logos and text; for photos, converting PNG to JPG or WebP usually gives a much smaller file.

Examples

  • A 4.2 MB phone photo resized to 1600 px wide at 80% quality → about 300–450 KB.
  • A 2.5 MB PNG screenshot converted to WebP → often under 300 KB.
  • A scanned ID at 3 MB compressed to 70% quality → around 400 KB, still readable.

Privacy

IDs, payslips and family photos are sensitive. Many free compressors upload your file to a server. ToolsPH processes the image locally using your device's own browser, so the photo never leaves your phone or laptop. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works. To combine compressed scans into a single document, use Merge PDF.

Tips for best results

  • Crop unnecessary background first.
  • Avoid compressing the same JPG many times — quality drops each round.
  • Keep the original until the upload is accepted.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which format should you use?

JPG is the safest choice for photos because every website, government portal and phone accepts it. It handles gradients and skin tones well and compresses strongly, but it does not support transparency and shows blocky artifacts at very low quality. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which is ideal for screenshots, logos, charts and scanned text, and it supports transparent backgrounds — but photos saved as PNG are often five to ten times larger than the same photo in JPG. WebP, developed by Google, usually produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality and supports transparency. It is great for websites, online stores and Facebook page graphics. However, some older government and school portals still accept only JPG or PNG, so check the allowed file types before converting.

For sellers on Shopee, Lazada or Facebook Marketplace, smaller product photos load faster on mobile data, which helps buyers browse more items. A good target is around 1200 pixels on the longest side at 75–80% quality.

FAQ

Is this a free compress image online tool?+

Yes. Compress JPG, PNG, or WebP images in your browser at no cost. No account required.

Do you upload my photos?+

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser with browser-image-compression / canvas. Files stay on your device — useful for IDs, resumes, and portal uploads in the Philippines.

What formats are supported?+

JPG, PNG, and WebP work well on modern mobile browsers. Very large images may take a few seconds.

Will quality drop a lot?+

You control max file size and dimensions. Lower targets shrink files more but can soften detail — preview before you download.
