How we count

A word is any group of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, so "Pag-IBIG" counts as one word and "₱25,000" counts as one word. Sentences are counted by ending punctuation (. ! ?). Paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines. Different apps can differ slightly — Microsoft Word, Google Docs and online forms do not always treat hyphens, numbers and symbols the same way — so leave a small margin under strict limits.

Reading and speaking time

Average adults read about 200–250 words per minute and speak about 130–150 words per minute. A 500-word speech therefore takes about 3½ to 4 minutes to deliver — useful for class reports, graduation speeches and video scripts.

Tips to cut words without losing meaning

  • Remove filler phrases: "in order to" → "to", "due to the fact that" → "because".
  • Use active voice: "The report was submitted by Ana" → "Ana submitted the report".
  • Delete repeated ideas and long introductions; start with your main point.
  • Replace lists of examples with the strongest one or two.

Writing for Philippine school and job requirements

Teachers and HR recruiters read many submissions, so staying within the limit shows you can follow instructions. For scholarship essays such as DOST-SEI or private foundation grants, focus on one clear story about your goals and family situation rather than listing every achievement. For cover letters to BPO, VA or corporate roles, keep it to three short paragraphs: why the role, what you bring (with one concrete result), and a polite closing. For a thesis abstract, include the problem, method, key findings and recommendation in about 200–250 words. When you write in Taglish for social media, counts still work the same way, but for formal applications use consistent English or Filipino throughout.

No. Counting happens locally in your browser as you type — useful for essays, cover letters, and social captions.

Does it count characters with spaces?+

Yes. You get both total characters and characters excluding spaces, plus sentences and paragraphs.

Can students in the Philippines use this for assignments?+

Yes for draft checks. Always follow your school’s official word-count rules if they differ.
